If you want to use macOS rather than Windows (or both, because you can install Windows 10 on it), this is the most affordable way to do it. In its favour, the mini is superbly engineered, runs very quietly, will last for years and can be expanded via Thunderbolt 3 without the fuss of internal upgrades.

You can upgrade the memory yourself and pay less than half what Apple charges. A six-core i5 model is the mid-range option if you also go for a 256GB SSD. For more demanding work, you can buy a six core i7 version. In our tests, its SSD was extremely fast and its quad-core i3 8100B processor outperformed many desktop i5s and laptop i7s. Blackmagic’s eGPU, for example, contains an 8GB AMD Radeon Pro 580, comparable to a 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060. One advantage of Thunderbolt 3, which is eight times faster than the usual USB 3.0 or 3.1 ports, is that you could add an external graphics processor. But this 20cm square recycled aluminium slab has nowhere to put them. If you spent that on a Windows PC, you’d expect a 1TB hard drive and a decent graphics card too. But what about the rest of us? Well, buys an i3 processor, 8GB of memory and a 128GB SSD. For the latter, ultra fast input/output and legendary reliability are worth as much as processing power. It’s for affluent Apple fans and IT managers who are spending someone else’s money. This mini isn’t aimed at cash-strapped consumers. But the devil's in the details.The cheapest Mac is neat and powerful, but it’s no bargain It's an excellent computer in a gorgeous, petite package. Still, I'm happy to recommend the computer for anyone looking for a customizable Mac setup, as long as you're willing to spend for it. However you might use the Mac Mini, though, it requires doing some research before your purchase, and potentially a few purchases after the fact, to make it all complete. Maybe you'll make a traditional setup like I did, and you'll buy a monitor or two, a keyboard, and a mouse. You can use the Mac Mini in so many different ways: It can be a server, or an entertainment console, or a DJ booth. If you want something that just works right out of the box, this isn't it the Mac Mini is simply a starting point that requires you go out and complete the setup or swap in your own keyboard, mouse, and monitor setup.
Is the Mac Mini the right purchase for you? It depends what you want out of a computer. Those details don't ultimately ruin the experience for me, though. Given the steep price of the new computer, I was bummed that Apple didn't include any extra cables or adapters - requiring more separate purchases - and I would've loved more ports to connect even more devices and accessories. The few drawbacks, to me, were in the details. It's fast, efficient, and pin-drop quiet. The Mac Mini excels as a desktop computer for work. The monitors built into the iMac and iMac Pro are nice, but they're expensive and difficult to repair, and I wanted to be able to customize my own office space a little more.

Overall, I was most annoyed by the Mac Mini's single HDMI port - I'm using more than one monitor, and most monitors have HDMI as their main input - and its uneven mix of USB-C to USB 3.0 ports. I'm able to just barely fit all of my accessories.Ĭurrently, my Mac Mini is connected to two monitors, a keyboard, a mouse, computer speakers, and a webcam.
